President Dwight D. Eisenhower

Source:Wikipedia- President Dwight D. Eisenhower (Republican, Texas) 34th President of the United States.

"Bringing to the Presidency his prestige as commanding general of the victorious forces in Europe during World War II, Dwight D. Eisenhower obtained a truce in Korea and worked incessantly during his two terms (1953-1961) to ease the tensions of the Cold War. Bringing to the Presidency his prestige as commanding general of the victorious forces in Europe during World War II, Dwight D. Eisenhower obtained a truce in Korea and worked incessantly during his two terms to ease the tensions of the Cold War. He pursued the moderate policies of “Modern Republicanism,” pointing out as he left office, “America is today the strongest, most influential, and most productive nation in the world.”

As I mentioned with the Nelson Rockefeller page, in the 20th Century really up to the 1990s or so, there were two large Center-Right factions in the Republican Party: a Conservative-Libertarian led by Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan, and others and there was a Progressive faction as well led by Rockefeller, Tom Dewey, Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, and others. The Christian-Right pretty much chased away the Progressive Republicans in the 1990s, but before the Far-Right came into the party, they were essentially a Progressive-Conservative party.

I have this page dedicated to Ike Eisenhower because along with Richard Nixon (as hard as this may be to believe) they are the last of the Progressive Republican President's. Plus, Ike was a great fiscal conservative, a cold warrior, anti-communist, as well as one our best civil and equal rights President's that we've ever had.
